From founding one of the first successful startups in Indonesia to advising the founders of tomorrow

Indonesia’s four wealthiest men earn as much as its most impoverished 100 million. Aldi Haryopratomo was incensed by the growing inequality in his nation, so in 2009 he founded a company dedicated to closing that gap. Mapan translates into "financial self-sufficiency." Its platform leveraged the strong bonds that already exist in communities to help them access products they could not previously afford and become more self-sufficient.

Aldi had heard about Endeavor early in his career, but in 2009 we hadn't yet opened an office in Indonesia. So every month, Aldi would dial our number to find out if we'd opened a local office yet. In 2012, we did precisely that, and he became one of the first Indonesian entrepreneurs to go through our selection process, joining Endeavor that year.

Aldi was mentored by the founding Chairman of Endeavor Indonesia, Pak Husodo, while Endeavor Catalyst's Allen Taylor guided Aldi through his Series B financing round. Within just two years, Mapan was acquired by Gojek, and Aldi took on the CEO role at Gojek-owned GoPay, South East Asia's leading payment and financial services group. GoPay's years of exponential growth were punctuated by investments from tech giants like Paypal, Google, and Facebook.

Aldi's Multiplier Effect

Aldi’s father once built roads for a living. "[My father] really believed that roads would have the biggest impact on our country," Aldi says. "I spent my life trying to find out how I could create as much impact as he had."

To grow his own impact, Aldi has left GoPay to mentor the next generation of entrepreneurs. He often connects with our highest-impact founders as they reach their next growth stage.

"After hitting a major funding milestone, and with Gojek about to IPO, I felt it was the right time for me to move on. I had been mentoring the teams at Halodoc, eFishery, and Kitabisa since their seed round and have officially joined their Boards," he says.

Ari has mentored more than a dozen founders, and directly invested in seven. As of publication, eight people he employed have also become entrepreneurs themselves.
